Meter Shop
Water Distribution’s Meter Shop is responsible for setting all meters, remote meters and handling general customer concerns about their meters.
Frozen Meters
A water meter can freeze when the weather is permitted to penetrate near the location of the meter. For instance, if a meter is near an outside window that is broken, the chances of the meter freezing are greatly increased. When Meter Shop is dispatched to replace a meter due to freezing, the customer is responsible for the cost of the replacement meter. The charge for replacing a frozen meter is currently $50. In order to determine if you have a frozen meter, you will need to check the bottom of the meter. Water will be spraying from the bottom plate of the meter when the meter freezes.
To schedule replacement of a frozen meter, please contact Customer Service at (419) 245-1800. After 4:00 p.m. call Water Emergency at (419) 242-5040.
Hydrant Meters
Hydrant meters are predominantly utilized by contractors for construction work, farmers for irrigation and/or various other uses. The rental of a hydrant meter is not always appropriate for filling swimming pools as it tends to be more expensive than utilizing your water hose. Improper use or inexperienced users opening hydrants can result in serious problems. While the hydrant meter tends to decrease the amount of time you spend filling your swimming pool, problems such as rusty water or water hammer may cause water main breaks and damage to the customer’s private water service. Rental of a hydrant meter requires a deposit of $300 for a 1" meter and $900 for a 3" meter. Customers who want to use a hydrant meter outside of the Toledo city limits (in cities supplied by Toledo water) should contact that city directly for a permit. For example, contact the cities of Maumee, Perrysburg, Rossford, Sylvania, or Waterville directly. For hydrant meter permits outside of these cities but in areas surrounding Toledo, contact Lucas or Wood County as appropriate.
Remote Registers
A remote register is a small numeric indicator attached to the outside of your house. It is connected to the water meter inside your home and displays the numbers on your meter that show the amount of water you use.
By having a remote register installed, the meter reader can obtain a good read without entering your home. You can enjoy several advantages:
- You do not have to be at home to have a reading
- The meter reader can record an actual meter read without entering the premises
It is easy to have a remote register installed. Simply call (419) 245-1800 and schedule an appointment for installation. Our technician needs access to hookup the register, so appointments are made for mornings or afternoons at your convenience. The $15.00 charge for remote installation will appear on your next water bill.
It is a good idea to compare the inside meter with the outside remote register at least once a year to ensure that we are obtaining correct water meter readings. If the outside remote register does not read the same as the inside meter, please contact our customer service center at (419) 245-1800. We will make arrangements to check your meter and register. If you fail to notify us of a discrepancy, it may create the necessity for us to bill a large amount of consumption, which is appearing on the inside meter at one time. This may create a financial hardship for you.
In the event the inside meter reads differently than the outside register, the customer is responsible for the amount of consumption registered on the inside meter.
