Effective May 5, 2008, the City of Toledo will begin the next step in continuing improvements to refuse and recycling collection services provided to residents. Changes will involve adjusting collection routes -- which will affect about 10 percent of residential customers refuse collection days, launching a pilot program to pick up refuse and recyclable materials from residents using automated trucks and change about 15 percent of residential customers A/B recycle collection days.  The pilot area participants will be issued two containers by vendors participating in the pilot program.  Therefore there will be a different appearance in participating neighborhoods.  The residents in the pilot areas will be encouraged to provide feedback regarding the pilot program via survey input.

Residents who will experience collection day changes or live in the area of the pilot program will be notified by the City of Toledo by mail. Residents are also encouraged to attend meetings hosted by the City to learn more about the new collection routes and the pilot program.

Please check the website calendar to your left or click here for a PDF of the meetings schedule.

Based on the outcome of the pilot program, the City plans to implement additional changes to residential refuse and single stream recycling collection. Specific program enhancements include a scheduled bulk collection service and conversion of most refuse and recycle routes to automation by June 1, 2010.

Both residents and the City will benefit from these changes. Benefits include a safer work environment for collectors, a neater appearance for neighborhoods with uniform refuse and recycling cans with less spillage, and increased recycling as a result of switching to automated collection – which will generate revenues and prolong the life of the City’s landfill.  There will also be a significant cost savings to the taxpayers.
