Brownfields are real properties, expansions, redevelopments, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. Cleaning up and reinvesting in these properties takes development pressures off of undeveloped, open land (Greenfields), and both improves and protects the environment. Since its inception in 1995, EPA's Brownfields Program has grown into a proven, results-oriented program that has changed the way contaminated property is perceived, addressed, and managed.  The EPA’s Brownfields Program is designed to empower our community in economic redevelopment in order to work together in a timely manner to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse Brownfields.

Our Program

The City of Toledo and the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority have worked diligently to bring together environmental assessment and clean-up grants from many state and federal sources that involve a range of purposes and specifications.  We have acquired over $14 million in EPA and Ohio department of Development funding to redevelop our communities along with our riverfront.  This also includes the management of these state and federal grants, which help to make efforts possible.  We are responsible for managing the environmental assessments, job training, and the Brownfield Cleanup revolving loan funds.

Notice of Funding Availability
The city has compiled a complete listing of available funds, which may be utilized for redevelopment and related projects.  For further information for environmental assessments and cleanup, please read our Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA).

Projects
The City of Toledo is continually working to identify sites, which may adversely impact our neighborhoods and business districts.  If you have an area you would like to call to our attention, please contact our Brownfield team members, Joel Mazur and Marisa DeLancey.
