Water Distribution's construction crews are responsible for the maintenance and repair of the water distribution system, all new taps in the water mains.
Water Main Breaks
What to expect when a water main break occurs in your area:
- Water to your residence and your neighbors may be turned off for a period of time.
- When water to your residence is restored, you may have to boil your water for a period of time.
- The length of time of the repair depends on several factors such as, how long it takes to obtain an OUPS (Ohio Utilities Protection Service) of the location; how long it takes to locate the exact location of the break; how long it takes to dig down to the water main; whether crews have the correct parts on the truck or in the shop to complete the repair; and other varying factors.
Boil Advisory
Why are boil advisories issued? To protect the public from any microbiological contaminates which may have entered the distribution system while a specific water main was down due to a repair.
What do I do when a boil advisory is in effect? Boil your water for five (5) minutes prior to drinking, brushing your teeth, or cooking.
Unauthorized Hydrant Usage
Hydrants are not for fun - they are to fight fires. Although they may appear to be a cool relief on a hot summer day, unauthorized use of a hydrant may cause many problems for your neighbors and other citizens in your service area. Open hydrants may also inhibit the ability of the Fire Department to fight fires effectively. They may also create problems with the water distribution system. Some of the problems that may be experienced are:
- rusty water
- water hammer (which can cause main breaks in the distribution system)
- inability to fight fires effectively
- low water pressure for customers
- hydrant bolts may be stripped and cause the inability to turn-on or off a hydrant. This may cause the need for Water Distribution personnel to repair the hydrant, which can cause customers in the area to be without water service until the hydrant is repaired or replaced.
If you see a hydrant that has been opened illegally, please contact Water Emergency at (419) 242-5040 so we can ensure the closure of the hydrant to protect the neighborhood.
Hydrant Flushing
Occasionally it is necessary for Water Distribution personnel to flush hydrants in order to effectively maintain the distribution system. While we are flushing hydrants, we control the flow to reduce potential harm to passers-by, but still maintain a good flow of water to "clean" out the distribution system.
