SIMPLE RULES TO FOLLOW - DIVISION OF SOLID WASTE

The rules listed below apply only to non-pilot areas of Toledo

  1. Refuse is normally collected on the same day each week. Refuse collection will be provided weekly from the point of pickup, either at the curb or alley line, for all properly containerized, bagged, or bundled material.
    Collection delayed for major holidays:
    1. New Year’s Day
    2. Memorial Day
    3. July 4th
    4. Labor Day
    5. Thanksgiving Day
    6. Christmas Day
  2. If your regular collection day falls on or after one of these major holidays, refuse collection may take place one day late throughout the week, ending on Saturday. Collection on all other holidays will be the regularly scheduled pickup day.
  3. A maximum of 6 regulation metal and/or plastic refuse containers will be collected from each residence. An unlimited amount of bags, bundles, or other household items – such as sofas, armchairs, tables, televisions, or other items that will not fit into a container – will be collected. The residences on alley collection are not permitted to utilize bags unless they are placed in refuse containers.
  4. Containers must be placed at the point of collection no later than 7:00 a.m. on collection day, and no earlier than 5:00 p.m. from October 1 through March 31 and 7:00 p.m. from April 1 through September 30 the preceding day. Refuse containers must be removed from the point of collection by 7:00 p.m. the day of collection.
  5. The City is not responsible for split or shattered containers.
  6. All containers, bags, etc. must be located at the point of collection and be within 6 feet of the curb line, alley line, or traveled roadway. No plastic bags may be used for alley pickup.
  7. Refuse containers must be of relatively sturdy plastic or metal construction with no attached lids. They must be tapered out with two handles and a maximum capacity of 35 gallons, with a total weight not to exceed 60 pounds.
  8. Containers manufactured with one handle are acceptable if they weigh no more than 40 pounds.
  9. Plastic bags containing material will be collected, except for those residences that remain on alley collection, if placed at the regular pickup point, and must weigh no more than 40 pounds. Paper and small plastic grocery bags containing material will NOT be collected.
  10. All bags must be securely tied shut. Loose items of 5 or more (such as lumber, brush, etc.) are to be tied in bundles at both ends with nails removed, not exceeding 6 feet in length and under 40 pounds.
  11. Notwithstanding warranties, the use of rigid or semi-rigid plastic containers is not recommended during cold weather, as they tend to split or shatter during collection operations.
  12. Spillage resulting from torn bags or damaged containers is the resident’s responsibility.
  13. Personal hygiene materials must be securely wrapped or containerized, then placed in a regulation refuse container for disposal.
  14. Used hypodermic needles must be placed in an impermeable container – a SHARPS container or plastic laundry detergent bottle with the lid tightly secured – and placed in a regulation refuse container.
  15. All regular household waste will be accepted when properly containerized. Items small enough to be put into an approved container must be in one. If the resident wishes to dispose of animal waste, it must be securely wrapped in paper or plastic and placed in a regulation refuse container.
  16. Rugs/carpet must be rolled and tied at both ends and be no longer than 6 feet.
  17. Concrete and asphalt material must be broken up and placed into a regulation container. It may not exceed the maximum weight of 40 pounds in bags or 60 pounds in cans.
  18. No tires will be collected – Call (419) 213-2230.
  19. The City of Toledo is not authorized to collect or dispose of hazardous materials, including oils, paint and chemicals – Call (419) 213-2230.
  20. No building or construction materials resulting from commercial work or major automobile components will be collected.
  21. No tires, batteries, large automobile parts, paint, or large appliances will be collected.
  22. No gasoline-powered equipment (lawnmowers, snow blowers, etc.) will be collected.

ANSWERS TO FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Refuse will NOT BE COLLECTED under the following conditions:

  • When the previously stated regulations have not been followed.
  • Where containers are frozen to the ground or where contents are frozen in containers.
  • Where containers have to be lifted more than 24 inches from racks, or containers are wedged in place, or where containers are tied or chained to a rack.
  • Where items extend more than 12 inches above the rim of the container.
  • Badly damaged or hazardous regulation containers will not be collected.

How do I throw out my old can?
Attach a note to the container stating “Please take can.”

Do you have a trash can for me?
It is the obligation of the occupants of the dwelling to provide approved refuse containers.

What happened to my garbage can?
It is strongly recommended that the owner mark all permanent type containers. The last name and/or house number will serve to minimize thefts and eliminate confusion of container’s ownership.

Hey, I didn’t mean to throw that out!
The City of Toledo assumes no responsibility for property placed in containers or placed at the collection point by mistake.

Can I put my trash in cardboard boxes and cartons?
Cardboard boxes and cartons containing only original packing material will be collected. Cardboard boxes and cartons containing garbage or refuse will not be collected.
